Promotional Objective
Prior to 2017, the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) had identified the need for a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of older adults and their families to better inform health care research, policy, and practice, as well as the opportunity to build on the strong interest and expertise in aging-related topics among IHPI faculty members. In 2017, to fill this need, IHPI launched the National Poll on Healthy Aging (NPHA) with support from AARP and Michigan Medicine. Specifically, IHPI developed the following promotional objectives related to the NPHA:

IHPI utilizes owned, paid, and earned media to accomplish their promotional objectives with the NPHA. For owned media, IHPI has developed a website, poll reports, poll extras, publicly-available data, news articles, social media posts and graphics, targeted emails, videos, presentations and posters at conferences, academic publications, blog posts, poll seminars, and NPHA-branded promotional items. For paid media, IHPI purchases Google Ads and social media ads to promote specific NPHA research content. And for earned media, IHPI has has steadily grown awareness of the brand and cultivated a following of researchers, journalists, and social media users who continue to share and repost social media posts, author news stories, and create citations for NPHA research.

The NPHA promotion campaign has been categorically successful. IHPI makes all NPHA data available to the public, and to date, more than 1,750 students and researchers at universities from around the world have downloaded the data for their own research. Additionally, the poll was featured over 220 times in major national media outlets between May 2021 and May 2022, including The New York Times, US News & World Report, CNN, The Washington Post, HealthDay News, Reuters, NPR, Forbes, NBC News, and USA Today. Also, more than 21,000 views have accumulated across the twelve YouTube videos featuring NPHA findings. Finally, in May 2022, IHPI celebrated the NPHA's five-year anniversary during a webinar, which attracted over 520 registrants across the U.S.
